Shiuan Yan Studio

A research-Driven immersive creative practice.

Developing the Perceptual–Temporal Framework as an evolving methodology for understanding how immersive experiences take shape and unfold

Spatial Condition | Perceptual Structuring | Embodied Relation | Temporal Unfolding

Drawing on phenomenology, East Asian aesthetic philosophy, and spatial storytelling, the studio explores embodied perception, relations, and temporality as intertwined dimensions of immersive experience — tracing how shifts in perception and understanding may gradually give rise to meaning.
Responding to contemporary acceleration and continuous stimulation, the studio turns its attention toward deeper layers of human perception — how we encounter the world, how experiences stay with us, and how perception and understanding continue to shift long after an experience has passed.

Weaving time and space through flow, shaping perception through rhythm and interaction, where meaning gradually emerges within immersion.

TRANS-COMPOSITION

Research-based VR work | A Life Story

Directed by Shiuan Yan, Trans-composition is an internationally recognized poetic VR work rooted in East Asian philosophical thought, exploring perception, relation, and temporality through immersive space.

From a first-person perspective, viewers enter a quiet, metaphysical realm modeled as a game of life, where unfolding metaphors gradually open into a contemplative dialogue with the self. Through immersive space and subtle symbolism, the work seeks to evoke philosophical resonance.

Presented at SIGGRAPH Asia and the NewImages Festival, the work has received the NewImages Interactivity Prize, the FIVARS Award for Excellence in Visual Design, and a Special Mention Award at Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival.
